Call me smug, but I always have 3 books open at any given time. With two young children, I snatch a couple of seconds here and there to desperately read a sentence (only to re-read it 24 hours later). Here are the books that have made my exclusive August VIP list.
The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter
Not that you care, but my brother gave this book to my husband for our Christmas book exchange. My husband only has books for show. I've never seen him read one. So, I took it upon myself to do it.
Anyway, as a boring suburban mom this book really stoked some fire in me to go out there and do hard things. It's a good mix of story-telling and interesting data from people in the scientific community around what makes humans human and why modern culture really is turning is into Idiocracy.
Braiding Sweet Grass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Honestly, this book makes my VIP list every month and this is maybe the 4th time I've read it. The author is such a beautiful writer. She has this way of melding science and spirituality that is so profound. I cry a lot reading her stories about motherhood (in a good way).
Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women, and the Way Forward by Gema Hartley
I felt like she wrote the book for me... and you likely will too if you're in a relationship with a man (bless 'em). She finally gave me a name for the mental burnout that I experience every day trying to make everyone's life the best it can be. Apparently except for mine.
